Where is Belize?
Let’s start with the basics, where on earth is Belize?Belize is located in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. But here’s where it gets interesting: although it’s part of mainland Central America, Belize is also a proud member of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community. That means it shares ties not just with its Central American neighbors, but also with Caribbean nations like Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. So, geographically Central American, but culturally Caribbean? You bet. And that’s part of what makes Belize so unique.
Who Lives in Belize?
Here’s where things get even more colorful, the people of Belize are wonderfully diverse. Mestizo (≈53%): People of mixed Spanish and Mayan descent. You’ll find them mostly in northern Belize. Creole (≈26%): In Belize, this refers to anyone with partial Black African ancestry who speaks Kriol. Predominantly in Belize City. Maya (≈11%): Belize has three distinct Maya groups, Yucatec, Mopan, and Q’eqchi’, each with its own language and traditions. Garifuna (Garinagu): Afro-Indigenous people originally from St. Vincent, mostly residing in southern Belize, especially Dangriga. East Indians & Mennonites: Small but significant communities that contribute greatly to Belize’s agriculture and economy
What’s the Climate Like in Belize?
Alright, weather nerds, this one’s for you.Belize is firmly in the tropical climate zone, meaning warm temps year-round, but there’s a twist depending on where you are. Northern Belize (Corozal): Average rainfall is about 50 inches/year. Central Belize (Belize City): Closer to 75 inches/year. Southern Belize (Punta Gorda): A whopping 175 inches/year. In general: It’s hotter inland, cooler by the coast. Rainy season means sticky weather (hello, mosquitoes). Dry season brings breezes and milder temps. So yeah, it’s a bit of a weather rollercoaster, but knowing the patterns can help you pick your ideal time to visit or move.
Is It Really That Hot in Belize?
Short answer: Yes… and no. Let me explain.Belize has two main seasons: Dry Season (December to May): Pleasant, breezy, and much less humid. Rainy Season (June to November): Hot, humid, and sticky. It’s also hurricane season, with a spike in tropical storms, especially late summer and fall. Hot Tip: January to March is considered the best time to visit, think warm days, cool nights, and fewer bugs. Also, around Easter, the winds pick up, locals call it “Kite Season”. It’s not great for snorkeling, but it is perfect for flying homemade kites!
