Belize medical tourism safety checklist
No price saving is worth an avoidable clinical risk. Use this checklist before choosing a provider, paying a deposit or booking a flight.

Before choosing a provider
- Verify the clinician’s current Belize license and specialty credentials with the appropriate professional council.
- Ask for the exact facility—not only the clinic or coordinator name—and confirm anesthesia, recovery and emergency capabilities.
- Request recent procedure volume, complication and revision policies, and independently verifiable accreditation if claimed.
- Share your full medical history and medication list with the treating clinician and your clinician at home.
Before paying
- Get an itemized written quote showing surgeon, anesthesia, facility, implants, medications, tests, nights, follow-up and taxes.
- Ask who pays if the procedure changes, a complication extends your stay, or medical evacuation is needed.
- Use a traceable payment method and retain every agreement, receipt and message.
- Confirm cancellation, refund and revision terms in writing.
Travel and recovery
- Do not combine surgery recovery with strenuous tourism, diving, alcohol or remote-island travel.
- Ask the surgeon when you may safely fly. Surgery and air travel can increase blood-clot risk.
- Travel with a capable adult when sedation or surgery is planned and keep an emergency contact sheet offline.
- Arrange follow-up at home before departure and obtain operative notes, imaging, lab results, prescriptions and device details.
Emergency planning
- Identify the nearest appropriate emergency department and the route from your lodging.
- Confirm whether your travel insurance covers elective-treatment complications and medical evacuation; many policies exclude them.
- Budget for upfront payment. US travel guidance notes that Belize hospitals may require cash payment before treatment.
- For serious illness or injury, understand that advanced care may be limited and evacuation may be necessary.
Red flags: pause the booking
Pressure to pay immediately, refusal to name the surgeon or facility, guaranteed outcomes, no medical-history review, cash-only instructions, unclear anesthesia, promises that recovery is a vacation, or no written complication plan are reasons to stop and verify.
